Watch: Hacker manages to get Call of Duty 4 running on OnePlus 6T

April 10, 2019 0

Call of Duty 4 on the OnePlus 6T.

The OnePlus 6T has proven itself to be a great flagship for tinkerers, as Dutch hacker Bas Timmer ported Windows on Arm (WoA) to the device last week. Now, the 25-year-old has taken to Twitter to show off his latest hack, and it might please Call of Duty fans.

Timmer posted a short video on Twitter, showing the PC version of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare running on the OnePlus 6T. The hacker notes that he’s indeed using Windows on Arm to help enable this feat.

The video shows Timmer starting a game on the popular Rust level, albeit without any other players. The performance itself is wobbly at this stage, but it’s playable if you’re a member of the low-end gaming subreddit. We don’t see any single-player gameplay or an actual multiplayer match taking place though, so we don’t know how it holds up during a proper session.

Editor's Pick

It’s a pretty remarkable feat nonetheless, especially when you consider that it’s the work of one person. And it also shows us just how far Windows and mobile chipsets have come in the past decade. In saying so, we wonder whether a Snapdragon 855-toting phone could deliver better performance in the game.

We’ve contacted Timmer to find out more about the project and will update the article accordingly when we get a response. Are there any other Windows games you’d like to see on Android though? Let us know in the comments!

Renders might show off the three-eyed beast that is the Oppo Reno premium edition

April 10, 2019 0

IndiaShopps

With the Oppo Reno popping up on several websites, there’s talk that the version we’re seeing is the standard edition. There’s also talk of a premium version of the Oppo Reno with the 10x optical zoom sensor, a version that IndiaShopps reportedly grabbed renders of.

According to the renders, this version of the Reno sports three rear cameras. The third camera from the top appears to be the 10x sensor, which is square and appears similar to what we saw during MWC.

Editor's Pick

Otherwise, the renders show off a version of the Reno that’s similar to what we saw last week. That means the phone comes in four colors — Fog Sea Green, Extreme Night Black, Mist Powder, and Nebula Purple.

The similarities also mean that this premium version of the Reno likely features a 6.6-inch AMOLED display, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, at least 6GB of RAM, at least 128GB of storage, and a 48-megapixel primary camera.

Oppo will hold its Reno launch events in China tomorrow, April 10 and in Zürich, Germany on Wednesday, April 24. We should learn much more about the smartphone, including its price and versions. Folks in China can reserve the Reno through Oppo’s website and Vopmart.com.

NEXT: Reservations for the enigmatic Oppo Reno are now open

Oppo F11 Pro climbs to the Mt. Everest Base Camp to shoot some amazing photos

April 10, 2019 0

Mt. Everest is a beautiful place, but most of us will never go there – we only have photos and videos shot by others to look at. And while some add bulky camera equipment to their already heavy luggage, others go up with just a phone.

Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa and photographer Adam Meng trekked to the Everest Base Camp with an Oppo F11 Pro[1] in hand and shared some of the photos they took.

The mountainscapes look spectacular, but getting there isn’t easy. The path goes through narrow iron bridges that are peppered with prayer flags. They are meant to give passers-by strength, but they also hint at the strength of the wind, which you don’t normally see in a photo.

Base Camp is home to marvelous sunrises and (thanks to no light pollution) all the stars are visible in the night sky. The Ultra Night Mode of the F11 Pro was used to snap the two images below.

It gets pretty cold up there – so you need to be quick when taking your gloves off to snap a photo – but the results are worth it. Plus, it sounds like the phone wasn’t bothered by the cold or the thin air.

What Oppo pulled may be a publicity stunt, but as far as these go it's certainly among the better ones we've seen. Anything for a few spectacular shots, right?

Counterpoint: Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T adopters came over from Samsung

April 10, 2019 0

Here's an interesting stat - among Google Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T buyers in Q4 of 2018 in the US, the most were former Samsung owners. Less than 20% were iPhone users.

Now let's clarify a bit. According to Counterpoint Research data, some 51% of Pixel 3 buyers in the States were owners of a Galaxy smartphone, however 31% of them owned a three year old Galaxy S7[1]. While 37% of OnePlus 6T buyers came from a Samsung phone, many of them used either a Samsung J2 Prime or the aforementioned Galaxy S7.

Also worth noting is that 80% of the Pixel 3's sales came from owners of Android devices and that might be seen as a disappointment for a phone aimed at converting iOS users.

While not exactly leaders in the US market, it's important to note that the Google Pixel 3 accounted for 7.3% of all Verizon sales during the final quarter of 2018 while the OnePlus 6T captured 2.4% of T-Mobile's total sales.

However discounts on Samsung and Apple smartphones have lead to a slow Q1 of 2019 for the OnePlus 6T.

Qualcomm unveils 11nm Snapdragon 665, 8nm Snapdragon 730 and 730G with improved graphics

April 10, 2019 0

Today Qualcomm took the wraps off its two newest mobile chipsets: the Snapdragon 665 and the Snapdragon 730 (which also gets a 730G bin, with 15% better graphics).

Snapdragon 665

The Snapdragon 665 seems to be intended as the successor to the Snapdragon 660[1]. Compared to that, it's made on a smaller 11nm LPP process, which means it should bring some battery life improvements to the table as well as some cost reduction.

Like its predecessor, the 665 has four Kryo 260 cores, based off of the ARM Cortex-A73 microarchitecture, but these only go up to 2GHz compared to 2.2 GHz in the 660. The four low-power Kryo 260 cores (based on Cortex-A53) are still clocked at 1.8GHz.

A big improvement should arrive in the graphics department, with the new Adreno 610 GPU, and Hexagon 686 DSP. The Snapdragon 665 employs the Spectra 165 ISP, which supports up to a 48 MP single main camera, or 16 MP dual snappers, or even triple setups (whereas the 660 topped out at 24 MP single). Those are all the differences.

Snapdragon 730 and 730G

Compared to the 710[2], which it is probably replacing, the Snapdragon 730 upgrades the two 'big' CPU cores from Kryo 360 (based on ARM Cortex-A75) to Kryo 470 (Cortex-A76), while keeping the same maximum clock speed of 2.2 GHz. The six 'small' power-efficient cores are still based on Cortex-A55, but they go up to 1.8GHz now, 100MHz more than before. All of this should translate into a substantial 35% leap in CPU performance.

Also new in the 730 are the Adreno 618 GPU (which promises 25% increased performance), Hexagon 688 DSP, and Spectra 350 ISP, the latter of which enables up to a 36 MP single main camera or a 22 MP dual setup and 960fps 720p slo-mo video capture, as well as 4K HDR video Portrait mode. The new ISP can do computer vision acceleration too, and the new DSP includes Qualcomm's Tensor Accelerator units for machine learning inferencing - these have so far been features relegated to the top tier 8xx line of Snapdragon SoCs, but not anymore.

The Snapdragon 730 is made on Samsung's 8nm LPP process, which at the moment is the second best there is - and since this is still a mid-range chipset, that's quite impressive. The new process should yield some battery life improvements compared to the Snapdragon 710 which was made on a 10nm process, but we'll have to wait for shipping devices to really judge that.

There will also be a Snapdragon 730G, which promises 15% better graphics performance compared to the 730, due to the use of higher clock speeds. All of the new chipsets are stated to be available in commercial devices in mid-2019.

Exclusive: Honor 20 (or Honor 20 Pro) case render leak shows space for many rear cameras

April 10, 2019 0

Today a trusted source who wishes to remain anonymous but has been reliable in the past sent us an image of an upcoming official case for a yet unannounced Honor device. Here it is in all its glory:

While seeing just the case doesn't give us a lot of information about the phone it's designed for, there are still some educated guesses we can make. First off, it looks like this handset will have a bunch of rear cameras, as the cutout for those is quite big. The design of the cutout itself makes us think of the Huawei P30 Pro[1]'s camera arrangement, with the LED flash placed to the right of the main camera array, although in this case it's on the lower side, not the upper.

We'd venture a guess and say this Honor device will come with at least three cams on the back, unless it completely apes the P30 Pro and adds a TOF 3D camera under (or above) the LED flash as well. Given that all of this implies it will be a high-end offering, it's likely to be the Honor 20 Pro[2], because so far we haven't seen any leaked renders of that handset itself - whereas the non-Pro Honor 20[3], if we go by past leaks, will have a different rear camera arrangement[4]. Then again, if those previous rumors were wrong, we might in fact be looking at a case for the Honor 20. Only time (and more leaks) will tell for sure.

The Honor 20 Pro is expected to sport Sony's IMX600 sensor, which apparently has 48MP resolution just like the IMX586 that we've already seen in a few phones. The Honor 20 Pro has also been rumored to have a 6.1" OLED screen with an under-display fingerprint scanner, the Kirin 980 chipset, and three RAM/storage configurations - 6/128 GB, 8/128 GB, and 8/256 GB. Pricing in China should start around $450, which will probably translate into €500-550 in Europe, and the Honor 20 Pro could get official as soon as April 25.

Meizu 16s press render leaks, showing off notchless display

April 10, 2019 0

Chinese phone maker Meizu is expected to announce the 16s soon. We've been hearing about it for the past few weeks and the smartphone recently got TENAA certification[1] hinting at an imminent launch in China. Thanks to previously leaked images, we already have an idea of what the 16s will look like, but now, an official-looking render has surfaced which gives us our best look yet at this smartphone.

This render shows us that the Meizu 16s[2] will flaunt a notchless display surrounded by tiny bezels and a selfie camera above it on the right side. At the back, the phone has dual cameras stacked vertically in the left corner, and below them is what looks like a laser AF sensor with an LED flash ring around.

While this render does look legit and mostly aligns well with previously leaked images at first glance, taking a closer look at it makes us question its accuracy.

The images we saw on TENAA revealed that the 16s has a volume rocker and a power button on the right, but this render shows the phone with a similar arrangement on its left side as well. Furthermore, the top of the phone also seems to have a cut-out for a USB like the bottom. Either someone created those renders based on earlier leaks or there's something we are missing on the admittedly low-res TENAA shots.

We will hopefully have more clarity regarding the design of the Meizu 16s soon.

A Galaxy Event: how to watch and what to expect (Galaxy A80 and A60)

April 10, 2019 0

Samsung will unveil a number of Galaxy A phones tomorrow, on April 10[1]. The Galaxy A90 will likely be the star of the show, though it will go by “Galaxy A80”. The other phone missing from the lineup is the Galaxy A60 and there’s been a fair share of leaks about it too. Here’s what to expect and how to watch the event live.

We’ll start with the event, for those who don’t want spoilers. It begins on Tuesday at 12MP GMT and you can find links to the livestream here[2] (we’ll embed it below as soon as it’s available).

The latest unofficial renders show that the Samsung Galaxy A80[3] will have a wild design that combines a slider with a rotating camera[4] so that the rear camera camera can flip around to shoot selfie photos. It’s a dual camera (48MP + 8MP, plus maybe a ToF sensor) and this setup leaves the 6.7” AMOLED screen free of notches and holes.

The Galaxy A90 is expected to have a 3,700mAh battery with the same 25W fast charging enjoyed by the Galaxy A70 and the Galaxy S10 5G.

We have a better overview of the Samsung Galaxy A60[5] specs thanks to TENAA[6]. It will be a smaller phone with a 6.3” AMOLED display and a 32MP selfie camera inside a punch hole. The camera setup on the rear will feature 16MP, 8MP and 5MP modules.

The chipset (likely an Exynos) will have two big CPU cores plus six small ones and will be coupled with 6/8GB of RAM and 64/128GB of storage. The battery on the Galaxy A60 will have 3,410mAh capacity, the fast-charge situation is unclear.

While the Galaxy A90 will have an in-display fingerprint reader, the A60 will have to settle for a rear-mounted reader (despite early reports to the contrary).

PS. K-pop band Blackpink will be live on stage at the event in Bangkok, Thailand.

LG G8 ThinQ review

April 10, 2019 0

Introduction

Even though the name states otherwise, the G8 ThinQ is actually a minor hardware refresh of last year's LG G7 ThinQ. Sure, it has the brand new Snapdragon 855 behind the wheel and a couple of neat (kind of) software and hardware features. But are they enough to battle the newly released Galaxy S10 trio or even the Huawei P30-series? After all, both Huawei and Samsung introduced not one but at least a couple of cutting-edge features on their latest flagships.

As it turns out, LG's list of cutting edge features is not among the short ones either. Aside from the Snapdragon 855, the G8's key selling points are the Crystal Sound OLED (piezoelectric) screen, the 3D ToF sensor on the front capable of advanced facial and palm recognition and the so-called Air Motion gestures.

LG G8 Thinq review

Strangely enough, we think that those features won't be the main driving factor of a future G8 ThinQ buyer. No, in fact, it's the size and the ergonomics of the handset will attract some customers. Although the 6.1" screen diagonal isn't exactly "compact", with competing phones easily touting 6.4-inch or 6.5-inch screen diagonals, this one stands out as a compact proposition. Depending on the pricing, the G8 ThinQ might be a decent alternative to the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S10.

LG G8 ThinQ specs

  • Body: 151.9 x 71.8 x 8.4 mm, 167 grams, metal side frame, Gorilla Glass 5 front and Gorilla Glass 6 on the back; IP68 dust/water proof and MIL-STD-810G compliant.
  • Screen: 6.1" OLED, 1440 x 3120px resolution; 19.5:9 aspect ratio; ~564 ppi; 100% DCI-P3, Dolby Vision. HDR10.
  • Chipset: Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm): Octa-core (1x2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3x2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4x1.79 GHz Kryo 485), Adreno 640 GPU.
  • Memory: 6GB RAM, 128GB built-in storage, microSD slot support.
  • OS: LG UX based on Android 9.0 Pie.
  • Rear camera: Main: 12 MP, f/1.5, 27mm, 1/2.6", 1.4µm, OIS, Dual Pixel PDAF; Ultra-wide: 16 MP, f/1.9, 16mm, 1/3.1", 1.0µm, no AF; Telephoto (depending on market): 12 MP, 52mm, f/2.4, 1.0µm, 2x optical zoom, OIS, PDAF; LED flash; 1080p@30/60/, 4K@30/60fps, 720p@240fps, HDR10 recording.
  • Front camera: 8 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 1/3.6", 1.22µm, AF; 1080p@30fps video recording + 3D ToF camera.
  • Battery: 3,500mAh, Quick Charge 3.0 18W.
  • Connectivity: Dual-SIM; LTE-A, 4-Band carrier aggregation, Cat.16/13 (1Gbps/150Mbps); USB-C 3.1; Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac; dual-band GPS; Bluetooth 5.0.
  • Misc: Piezoelectric screen (Crystal Sound OLED), wireless charging, Hi-Fi Quad DAC via 3.5mm headphone jack, Hand ID, Face Unlock and rear-mounted fingerprint reader.

Unboxing the LG G8 ThinQ

We received the unit in its original packaging containing the usual user manuals, a handy cleaning cloth, and the SIM ejector tool. Surprisingly, there are no earphones included in the package.

LG G8 Thinq review

Of course, the charger is in there and it supports 9V/1.8A (16W) output or in other words Quick Charge 3.0. It comes with a detachable standard USB-A to USB-C data and charging cable.

Huawei Y5 2019 leaks with Helio A22

April 10, 2019 0

First, it was the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019[1] with Helio A22 in the Philippines. Then it appeared with less RAM as the Huawei Y6 2019[2], eventually getting rebranded as Y6 Prime 2019 in Pakistan[3]. Now a similar phone with somewhat shorter screen and the name Huawei Y5 2019 popped up with a photo and some specs.

The Huawei Y5 2019 is listed with MediaTek MT6761, which is the low-tier Helio A22 with quad-core CPU running at 2GHz and coupled with 2 GB RAM. There is also the screen with HD+ resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels, which translates to 19:9 ratio. The phone will come with Android 9, which supposedly should have EMUI 9.0 on top.

The leak does not say anything about launches, but it appears to be an Android Enterprise listing, so the phone should be out soon.

BOE Senior VP says more affordable foldable phones coming by 2021

April 10, 2019 0

Folding phones like the Samsung Galaxy Fold[1] and Huawei Mate X[2] are neat, but few will be able to afford them. The Fold is expected to retail for $2,000 while Huawei’s offering goes even further at $2,600. There is always a price premium on first generation devices and most users will stick to traditional smartphones for the time being.

BOE is one of the world’s largest display manufacturers and the main foldable display supplier for Huawei. Sooner or later display component prices will allow for more affordable folding phones and in a recent interview, BOE SVP Zhang Yu, confirmed that in two years time folding phones will retail in the $1,500 range. This figure is presumably for Huawei devices, using BOE screens but we can expect competitors to go even lower.

Report: OnePlus 6T made up only 2.4% of T-Mobile phone sales in Q4 2018

April 10, 2019 0

  • The OnePlus 6T isn’t a sales powerhouse for T-Mobile, according to Counterpoint Research.
  • Counterpoint doesn’t expect the 6T to gain any new market share going forward, either.
  • However, OnePlus likely views the 6T as a total success, considering this is its first official step into the U.S. market.

When OnePlus revealed it would release the OnePlus 6T in T-Mobile stores across the United States, it was huge news. This would be the first time U.S. consumers could walk into a carrier shop and buy a OnePlus product.

However much positive publicity the OnePlus/T-Mobile partnership received, it doesn’t seem that it equated to an overwhelming amount of sales. According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, the OnePlus 6T accounted for only 2.4 percent of smartphone sales at T-Mobile during the fourth quarter of 2018.

What’s worse is that Counterpoint only sees the OnePlus 6T’s sales declining from here on out.

“We do not believe the OnePlus 6T will continue to grow in market share in the current sales mix,” says Maurice Klaehne, research analyst at Counterpoint Research. “There is little marketing money spent by the OEM and older Apple and Samsung flagships have been discounted to make a similar value offer which most consumers will gravitate towards.”

Editor's Pick

However, this likely isn’t seen as a poor showing by OnePlus. We know for a fact that the company sold more units of the 6T than the OnePlus 6 in the U.S., largely due to the T-Mobile partnership. We also know that the OnePlus 6T started selling in T-Mobile stores in November, giving every other device at the carrier a two-month head start when it comes to these numbers.

We also know from Counterpoint that the OnePlus 6T accounted for 6.3 percent of T-Mobile’s online smartphone sales, which is a pretty respectable number when you consider those consumers could have just as easily gone to OnePlus.com and bought the phone unlocked.

In related news, Counterpoint also revealed this cool graphic depicting where users are coming from when they buy a OnePlus 6T:

Counterpoint Research

These numbers generally line up with a similar chart Counterpoint created for the Google Pixel 3, although LG steps in for Motorola. As with the Google Pixel 3, it appears that not too many iPhone users are getting swayed by the OnePlus 6T.

Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research, had some positive things to say about the OnePlus 6T when it comes to its standing in the market. “Both the Pixel and 6T devices show that there is room to innovate in the market,” he said. “While Samsung and Apple are dwarfing others in size, marketing spends, and consumer perception, there are pockets of users that are still interested in alternatives. OEMs looking to disrupt carrier channels can learn from the successes and failures of these two examples. With 5G at our doorstep, there are additional opportunities to stand out in the market and make a compelling value offering for consumers.”

OnePlus will launch its first 5G phone later this year.

Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser is actually really good

April 10, 2019 0

Logo of the Developer build of Microsoft Edge. Microsoft

Yesterday, Microsoft announced on its blog that the first Canary and Developer builds of its new Chromium-based Edge browser are now available. The Canary and Developer builds get updated daily and weekly, respectively.

What’s impressive is how well these early builds are running so far. I haven’t encountered many issues with the Developer build, though we’ll keep an eye out for bugs as we keep using it.

Also impressive is how well Chromium-based Edge’s current features work. Without doing anything, all of my bookmarks and favorites from Chrome loaded up just fine. The new Edge browser even supports existing Chrome extensions, though the Google Keep extension gives me an error when I try to sign into my Google account. Your mileage may vary.

Enabling Chrome extensions on Microsoft Edge. Screenshot of Chrome extensions on Microsoft Edge.

Keep in mind that this is a work in progress. Microsoft is working on Fluent Design tweaks for this version of Edge, with features like setting aside tabs and inking possibly appearing in future updates.

Editor's Pick

Also, Microsoft either removed or replaced 53 of Google’s services that come with Chromium. Removed features include ad blocking, Google Cloud Storage, Google Pay, Cloud Print, and more.

The good news is that the Chromium-based Edge browser seems to be something that Microsoft won’t abandon. Microsoft has had around 150 commits accepted into Chromium and is working with Google to improve Chromium. That way, the two companies can make it so that Chrome and Edge run better on Windows.

You can download the Chromium-based Edge browser at the link below. Expect to encounter at least a few bugs with the available builds. Also note that Microsoft is developing versions that will work on Windows 8, Windows 7, and macOS.

Update, April 9, 2019 (3:48PM EST): In addition to Oppo’s website, the upcoming Reno smartphone popped up on online retailer Vopmart.com’s website earlier today. The good news is that the listing gives us a better idea of what to expect.

According to the listing, the Reno features a 6.6-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080) resolution, a triple rear camera system that comprises of a 48-megapixel primary sensor, 20MP secondary sensor capable of 5x optical zoom, and a third time-of-flight (ToF) sensor, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor, and a 4,000mAh battery.

The listing also mentions an in-display fingerprint sensor and support for Oppo’s 50w fast charging.

As mentioned in the original article below, this could be the standard edition of the Reno. Rumors point to a more premium version that features a 10x optical zoom sensor.

Original article, April 5, 2019 (5:38PM EST): If you live in China, you’re in luck — reservations for Oppo’s upcoming Reno flagship smartphone are now open on its website.

According to the website, the Reno features a dual rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary sensor. There’s talk that the Reno is the first smartphone to feature Oppo’s 10x optical zoom technology, though there’s no mention of it on the website.

That said, Oppo vice president referred to the “Reno Standard Edition” when talking up the phone’s sample pictures. That means there could be a more premium version of the Reno that features the 10x camera.

Elsewhere, the website confirms the Reno’s slim bezels, large 4,800mAh battery, and four color choices — Nebula Purple, Extreme Night Black, Fog Sea Green, and Mist Powder. We’re expecting a Qualcomm processor, though we don’t know if it’s the Snapdragon 710 or Snapdragon 855.

Interestingly, Oppo vice president Shen Yiren said the Reno features a smaller 4,065mAh battery. As previously mentioned, the discrepancy could be due to there being more than one version of the Reno.

Lastly, the website mentions support for Oppo’s VOOC 3.0 charging standard. VOOC 3.0 is supposedly 23.8 percent faster than VOOC 2.0, so expect very fast top-up speeds from the newer standard.

As of this writing, China residents can reserve the Reno in Extreme Night Black, Fog Sea Green, and Mist Powder. All three color choices come with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Only the Fog Sea Green variant comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

There’s plenty we still don’t know about the Reno, though the website states an April 10 launch in Shanghai. Also, invites for the Reno launch event in Zürich, Germany went out to the press yesterday. It seems as if we’ll learn much more about the phone very soon.

Google Pixel 3 is apparently snatching users from Samsung, not so much Apple

April 10, 2019 0

  • Counterpoint Research revealed some statistics surrounding the Google Pixel 3.
  • Research suggests that less than one-fifth of Pixel 3 owners previously owned an iPhone, while over half formerly owned a Samsung device.
  • This must be disappointing to Google because it shows the Pixel is generating interest from users already in the Android ecosystem.

Judging from Google’s advertising methods, design choices, and feature efforts when it comes to the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, it’s pretty clear the company is trying to entice iPhone users over to Android. In our review for the Google Pixel 3, we even referred to it as “the Android iPhone.”

However, according to Counterpoint Research, the number of consumers who are leaving Apple for Google pales in comparison to the number of users leaving Samsung for Google.

In a recent blog post, Counterpoint Research suggests that around 18 percent of current owners of the Google Pixel 3 upgraded to it from an iPhone, while a whopping 51 percent upgraded from a Samsung smartphone. Remarkably, a total of 31 percent of Google Pixel 3 owners came specifically from the Samsung Galaxy S7, which at this point is over three years old.

Counterpoint also says that 14 percent of Pixel 3 owners upgraded from a Motorola device while 17 percent upgraded from something that wasn’t a Motorola, Samsung, or Apple smartphone.

Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint, said that the news that over 80 percent of Google Pixel 3 owners are just shifting from one Android device to another is likely disappointing to Google. “The Pixel was built to lead Android innovation and be a device to sway the iOS base over to Android,” he said, which Counterpoint’s findings don’t support.

However disappointed Google might be with these numbers, it still has much to celebrate. According to Counterpoint, in the final quarter of 2018, the Google Pixel line accounted for 7.3 percent of the total smartphone sales at Verizon. In that same period, Verizon’s sales accounted for about 16 percent of all smartphone sales in the country, so it’s clear Google is pushing some decent numbers.

Unfortunately, though, the numbers can’t be too great since Google hasn’t given even as much as a hint of how many Pixel smartphones are out there in the wild. We usually could deduce at least an estimate by looking at the Android distribution report — but this report hasn’t been updated since October of last year, right around the launch of the Pixel 3 (coincidence?).
