Oppo Reno announced in China: Expect standard model and 10x Zoom Edition

The Oppo Reno has been teased and leaked for months now, promising great zoom capabilities and a rather unique take on the selfie camera. Now, the manufacturer has announced the series in China ahead of its April 24 global launch.

The company has two devices on offer, namely the standard Oppo Reno and the Reno 10x Zoom Edition. Both phones share a 48MP primary camera (IMX586), but the two differ when it comes to the rest of the camera setup.

Oppo’s standard model packs a 5MP secondary camera, presumably for depth sensing. But the 10x zoom edition offers a 13MP periscope zoom camera (surprise) as well as an 8MP ultra-wide shooter. Oppo also refers to the 10x zoom as “hybrid” zoom, which suggests that the periscope camera tops out at 5x optical zoom (much like the Huawei P30 Pro).

True to the leaks, both models sport a 16MP f/2.0 shark-fin pop-up selfie camera. And it definitely makes for a unique design when compared to punch-hole displays and other pop-up shooters.

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition also stands out in other ways, offering a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 4,065mAh battery, a 6.6-inch full HD+ OLED screen, and 4K/60fps support. Meanwhile, the standard model delivers a Snapdragon 710 chipset, a 3,765mAh battery, a 6.4-inch full HD+ OLED screen, and 4K/30fps support. But Oppo’s standard model also features a 3.5mm port, which is lacking on the 10x Zoom Edition. Both devices sport in-display fingerprint sensors though.

Oppo’s standard model starts at 2,999 yuan (~$447) for the 6GB+128GB model, and 3,299 yuan (~$491) for the 6GB/256GB variant. There’s also an 8GB/256GB option, but the company hasn’t revealed pricing in this regard. The 10x zoom version will be available at a starting price of 3,999 yuan (~$595) for the 6GB/128GB version, but the brand will also be selling a 6GB/256GB model and an 8GB/256GB variant. Pricing for these variants hasn’t been disclosed just yet.

This is a breaking story. Expect more to follow…
