The best action movies on Amazon Prime Video:
Editor’s note: We will update this list regularly as action movies leave Amazon Prime Video and others are introduced.
1. The Avengers (2012)
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hinged on the success of this movie — The Avengers. The first team-up of Earth’s mightiest heroes made the MCU what it is today. Considering it has been almost eight years since the film’s release, there is no better time for a rewatch. The movie offers Joss Whedon’s signature blend of action spectacle interspersed with light-hearted comedy. It will appeal even to those that are not comic book fans — you only need to have a very cursory knowledge of who the heroes are. Watching the solo movies will only enhance the experience.
But Captain America, Iron Man and the gang aren’t the only ones to pay attention to. Tom Hiddleston gives a compelling and sometimes hilarious performance as villain Loki. Before Thanos, Loki was often considered the best villain of the series and for good reason. So, if you want to watch a fun and thrilling flick, you can’t go wrong with The Avengers. It’s a modern-day action classic.
2. Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)
The Mission Impossible spy-action film series (based on the 1960s TV show) has had its ups and downs in terms of quality, but the 2018 release of the sixth MI film may be the best movie in this series yet. Tom Cruise once again steps into the shoes of IMF secret agent Ethan Hunt. In this mission (which, of course, he accepts) he has to retrieve three plutonium cores that he and his team managed to lose. However, as with all of the MI films, there are constant double and triple crosses, plus many other surprises in store for Hunt and his team along the way.
Henry Cavill makes us forget (well, almost) that he was Superman, as he plays a CIA agent sent to monitor Hunt’s team. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie keeps us interested with a variety of action set pieces, including a HALO jump, a chase through Paris and one of the best fights inside a bathroom we have ever seen. Oh, and Cruise actually flies a helicopter for the film’s final sequence. As in, the actor, in real life. This is certainly one of the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video you can currently watch.
3. James Bond Movies (1962 – present)
It’s hard to find an action hero both as iconic and enduring as James Bond. For decades, his adventures have been adapted for radio, television, comics and most importantly films. The gentleman in her Majesty’s Secret Service has been on the silver screen since 1962, with the 27th film in the franchise set to be released this year. 007 has also been portrayed by seven actors, each bringing something new to the role of the suave agent. Something that unites all the Bond movies, however, is the thrilling action and entertainment they provide.
The good news is that Amazon Prime has added a whole slew of James Bond movies to its catalog, which you can watch for free with your Prime subscription. The only exception are the newer Daniel Craig Bond movies, which will cost you an extra rental fee. Which film you pick is up to you — some of the older flicks haven’t aged well and border on the ridiculous and cheesy by today’s standards, but for some people that’s their whole charm.
4. Escape from New York (1981)
The year is 1997 and crime in the US has risen 400%. The solution? The island of Manhattan has been turned into a massive prison under 24/7 surveillance. All escape routes are barred, and prisoners are left to their own devices. This is where Snake Pliskin, a former special forces soldier, finds himself. So does the president of the United States after his plane is attacked en route to a peace summit. Pliskin is tasked with his rescue and promised a presidential pardon if he succeeds.
Escape from New York is an underrated 80s action classic. Written and directed by John Carpenter, the film hits hard with its social satire and commentary, most of which is relevant to this day. Escape from New York is also a thrilling flick with iconic characters which will keep you glued to your screen. It’s one of the best action movies of its decade and certainly one of the best you can watch on Amazon Prime.
5. The Man from Nowhere (2010)
South Korean cinema has exploded in popularity in recent years — so much so that we now have a Korean best picture winner for the first time ever. But there are plenty of amazing South Korean movies from the last decade too. Action and tales of revenge are a specialty and The Man from Nowhere falls into both categories. Directed by Lee Jeong-beom, the movie follows pawn shop owner Cha Tae-sik. He lives a quiet life and has befriended a neighborhood girl, So-Mi, whose mother Hyo-jeong often neglects her.
What the pawnshop owner doesn’t know is that Hyo-jeong is secretly stealing drugs. Things go awry and violent drug dealers kidnap both her and her child. Cha is determined to track them down and save them. The story is pretty straight-forward and even a bit cliched, but it’s executed excellently. Tension seeps from every scene and audiences are not spared the brutal and bloody violence. It’s an excellent choice for your first foray into South Korean action cinema and one of the best action movies Amazon Prime has to offer.
6. Project Gutenberg (2018)
A counterfeiting criminal gang has perfected their technique so much that their fakes are almost completely indistinguishable from the original. Led by a mysterious man only known as the Painter, played by Chow Yun-fat, they have attracted the attention of the Hong Kong police. With the help of an ex-gang member and artist, the police is determined to hunt the Painter down by whatever means necessary.

Written and directed by Felix Chong, Project Gutenberg is a rare plot-driven action film, full of unexpected twists at every turn. And although the movie isn’t lacking grand action set pieces, its strength lies in its captivating story and characters. Chow Yun-fat in particular is excellent as the enigmatic and suave gangster — one of his best roles in recent years. So, if you want to watch a movie that will keep you glued to the screen from beginning to end, you can’t go wrong with Project Gutenberg: one of the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video.
7. Braven (2018)
We are used to seeing Jason Momoa in the roles of bloodthirsty barbarians or superhero demigods, but as Joe Braven he takes on a much more mundane role. Joe is a logging company owner. His father has recently suffered a serious head injury and the two decide to take a trip to the family’s mountain cabin for a quiet weekend. Unbeknownst to them, drug dealers have recently stashed their cocaine in the building, and they won’t hesitate to harm or kill in order to retrieve it.
Braven is yet another standard action film with a premise that isn’t terribly unique. However, director Lin Oeding’s stunt background helps ground the action in reality, offering a thrilling but convincing experience that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Braven ticks all the boxes for an entertaining flick, and as usual, Jason Momoa doesn’t disappoint as the action hero lead. It’s one of the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video, so check it out today.
8. Boondock Saints (1999)
Boondock Saints is a divisive movie. Panned by critics and considered a cult classic by audiences, it follows two Irish catholic brothers, Connor and Murphy, as they embark on a bloody journey of vigilante justice against the criminal world of Boston. The brothers, played by Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery, first encounter some Russian mobsters at their favorite pub. When the gangsters announce their intentions to take the pub over a brawl erupts. Thanks to their participation, the brothers become targets of the Russian mob. At first, their only goal is to defend themselves, but they soon come to believe they are on a mission from God. A local newspaper hails them as heroes and even the FBI agent on the brothers’ trail, played by William Defoe, can’t decide whose side he is on.
Don’t miss: The best classic movies on Amazon Prime right now
Boondock Saints can be quite controversial thanks to its glorification of vigilante justice and its unapologetic over-the-top violence. However, if you don’t take it at face value, it’s still a great guilty pleasure action flick. It’s more style than substance in many ways, but if that’s your cup of tea, it’s a great action film that you’ll enjoy.
9. Iron Man 2 (2010)
Before all Marvel content makes the jump to Disney Plus, you still have time to catch Iron Man 2 on Amazon Prime Video right now. The 2010 movie is the third in the MCU lineup. It brings back Robert Downey Jr. in his second outing as Tony Stark and the Armored Avenger Iron Man.
Iron Man 2, while not as good as the original, is still very enjoyable thanks to Downey Jr. and his performance as the witty billionaire industrialist. This is also the first movie that features Scarlett Johansson playing the role of superspy Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. The Black Widow. Don Cheadle makes his first appearance too, taking over the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes and putting on the War Machine armor. The star-studded cast compensates for the plot contrivances and cliches, keeping the movie engaging and entertaining. The special effects are top notch as well, making Iron Man 2 one of the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video.
10. Bumblebee (2018)
If you are not a fan of the Transformers franchise, you shouldn’t be too quick to overlook Bumblebee. Yes, the core premise remains the same — the Autobots and the Decepticons are at war and the world is in danger. However, this prequel set in the 80s doesn’t rely on flashy action scenes and massive explosions to carry it. The titular Autobot Bumblebee is sent to Earth as a scout. This is where Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld, finds him as a yellow VW bug hiding among the rubbish of a junkyard. Together, they have to evade both the Decepticons and a secret government agency.

Bumblebee sets itself apart from previous Transformers movies in many ways. For one, the film is not directed by Michael Bay but Travis Knight, who you might know from stop-motion animation hits such as Kubo and the Two Strings and ParaNorman. The movie also has better-paced action scenes that are easier to follow. At the heart of Bumblebee, however, are its compelling characters that have replaced the caricatures and stereotypes of old. If you haven’t seen it yet, catch this great action movie on Amazon Prime.
